How are spaces designed today to adapt to changing ways of living, consumption and social interaction?

In recent years, interior design has taken on an increasingly central role in shaping experiences, relationships and identities. Residential environments, commercial spaces and places dedicated to food and hospitality respond to constantly evolving needs, requiring updated design skills, an integrated vision and a deep understanding of cultural, technical and regulatory contexts. In this scenario, the Interior Designer is called upon to manage complex processes, combining creativity, methodology and coordination skills.

The First Level Master in Interior Design at IED Roma offers a training pathway focused on the design and enhancement of living, retail and food spaces. The programme is developed within a learning environment that reflects the operational dynamics of a professional design studio, allowing students to address all phases of the project, from initial research to final definition and presentation. Rome, with its historical layers and the presence of studios, companies and production realities active in the sector, represents a stimulating environment in which to experiment and engage with contemporary design.

Throughout the Master, students acquire theoretical, methodological and technical skills related to interior design, exploring topics such as space organisation, material selection, lighting, furniture, regulations and project communication. The programme has a strong laboratory-based focus and is structured around three main design experiences dedicated respectively to residential design, retail and food spaces.

The design laboratories are supported by theoretical modules, contributions from industry professionals and collaborations with companies, offering a concrete perspective on production processes and professional practices. Students work with the main design and representation software provided by IED and develop a portfolio collecting the projects created during the course. The programme concludes with a Final Thesis Project and a curricular internship, to be carried out in external organisations or within IED in the form of a field project.

The Master prepares professionals capable of working in the field of interior design with a comprehensive and informed approach. Upon completion of the programme, graduates may join architecture and design studios, companies in the sector or start their own professional practice as freelancers or consultants, working on the design and management of residential, commercial and food-related spaces, contributing to projects aligned with the needs of the contemporary market.
