The Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design at IED Roma is distinguished by its artisanal approach, with a strong emphasis on haute couture and meticulous attention to detail. Pattern-making, tailoring, embroidery, and textile research are combined with constant trend analysis, resulting in refined and conscious collections. Particular focus is placed on sustainable fashion: through upcycling practices and creative reuse of materials, students explore new expressive possibilities, reinterpreting even fur in a contemporary key.
Studying fashion in Rome means being immersed in monuments, museums, and urban settings that serve as cultural and visual stimuli, inspiring designers to merge tradition with experimentation.

Course structure and contents:

The programme spans three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skill development, and the use of innovative tools.

Year One: Students are introduced to the fashion system through its key components – clothing, accessories, and materials – while beginning to explore their own design identity. Practical and theoretical courses develop the foundations of drawing, design, and pattern-making, while tailoring workshops highlight artisanal quality. Cultural subjects such as fashion and art history help students interpret the present and navigate the sector critically.

Year Two: Dedicated to designing complete collections. Students focusing on clothing work on womenswear, menswear, knitwear, and sportswear; those specialising in accessories develop womenswear, menswear, and sports collections. Advanced pattern-making, knitwear, material use, and digital illustration are explored, with the introduction of software such as Clo3D and InDesign. Theoretical studies expand with courses in semiotics, photography, and business. Interdisciplinary experiences, such as the IED Factory, encourage teamwork and openness to diverse creative languages.

Year Three: Focused on the creation of an original capsule collection in haute couture, prêt-à-porter, knitwear, or accessories, developed as a thesis project. This is the result of personal research and may be individual, collective, or company-based. Workshops and courses support the realisation of the project, with particular attention to styling and final presentation.
