The Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and Art Direction at IED Torino trains visual designers who are fully aware of the ethical and social responsibility of visual communication in today’s world. The programme combines theoretical research and practical experimentation with a multidisciplinary approach, providing the tools to design and interpret contemporary language in a constantly evolving context. The aim is to develop versatile professionals – true polymaths – capable of expanding their cultural, practical and theoretical knowledge to interpret the present and create effective and functional visual languages, with a concrete perspective on the future of editorial design, branding and the digital world.

Course structure and contents:

The IED programme is structured over three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills and the use of precise and professional innovative tools.

The goal of the teaching approach is to train students capable of experimenting with the different modes and expressive possibilities of graphic design.

First Year: Dedicated to understanding the creative process and the fundamentals of visual language. Students explore the relationships between text, form, colour and meaning, acquiring technical skills in the use of professional software (such as the Adobe package – Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and learning the theoretical tools that support visual design.

Second Year: Focuses on consolidating skills and further defining professional identity. The design approach becomes more structured and group-oriented, with particular attention to research, prototyping and the management of complex projects. Editorial design, digital communication and infographics are explored in depth, promoting the ability to tackle articulated projects within professional contexts.

Third Year: Concentrates on project autonomy and entry into the professional world, addressing complex projects such as exhibit design systems, information design (whether longform or more complex multimedia platforms) and branding design (from in-house publications to complete corporate communication systems). Students work with real clients, from multinationals to local companies, refining their presentation and management skills. The programme concludes with the dissertation project, developed in groups over the second semester, representing a synthesis of the skills acquired.
