The Bachelor of Arts in Illustration at IED Torino considers drawing as the expressive and design language of creative and cultural fields. The three-year programme enables students to acquire transversal skills to engage with multiple scenarios, applying them to exhibition design, branding, decoration, pattern design, limited product editions, and developing the ability to communicate effectively through images. The teaching approach integrates visual research, image analysis and project communication, providing practical tools to create new imaginaries and develop new representational possibilities. The programme combines analogue and digital techniques with hands-on experiences and collaborations with industry professionals, helping students define personal and recognisable visual languages.

Course structure and contents:

The IED programme is structured over three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills and the use of innovative tools. The aim of the teaching approach is to train students capable of experimenting with the different modes and expressive possibilities of illustration, while developing versatility, flexibility and eclecticism.

First Year: Introduces manual drawing, with particular focus on life observation. Traditional techniques are combined with digital ones (Photoshop and Illustrator) within courses such as Animation Techniques. Theoretical courses consolidate knowledge of the historical and cultural landscape of illustration, through subjects such as Design Methodology and Theory of Perception and Gestalt Psychology (which studies how we perceive visual elements as unified wholes rather than separate parts. The year concludes with the creation of a thematic illustration project, expressing a coherent personal concept.

Second Year: Consolidates acquired skills and opens up to more complex projects, addressing different application areas: editorial illustration, scientific illustration, infographics, pattern design and experimental authorial projects. Style and visual direction are refined through courses such as Scientific Illustration, Creative Writing, Printing Techniques and Motion Graphics. The use of professional software is expanded with the introduction of Adobe InDesign and After Effects. Theoretical courses focus on contemporary cultural phenomena (cinema, visual arts, sociology of communication), while Design Management provides tools for managing and promoting the profession.

Third Year: Strengthens project autonomy and authorial awareness, preparing students to tackle complex professional scenarios or pursue specialist paths. Central to this year is the project of Illustration applied to space and objects, where drawing interacts with three-dimensionality, opening up fields such as brand identity, toy design, environmental and window decoration. Focus is placed on stop motion, integrated media and graphic design. The programme concludes with the creation of a professional portfolio and the thesis project, developed on commission, representing the synthesis of personal language, design vision and market relevance.
