The Bachelor of Arts in Product Design at IED Torino is dedicated to the design of "integrated products". It is a progressively challenging programme that explores the analogue and digital facets of contemporary products, developing strong methodological foundations typical of industrial design, strategic management and design sensitivity linked to UX/UI.

Through a curriculum that combines analytical thinking with design sensitivity, students tackle all phases of product and service development: concept, modelling, prototyping and validation, with constant attention to both short- and long-term impacts.

Course structure and contents:

The IED programme spans three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills and innovative tools.

First Year: Builds methodological and technical foundations introducing design, graphic representation and material management. Students learn technical drawing, sketching, physical and digital modelling, and software such as Fusion 360, Rhino, Illustrator and Photoshop, transforming ideas into concrete projects. Theoretical subjects – including design history, design methodology, theory of perception and gestalt psychology – provide a solid cultural framework for navigating the contemporary design landscape.

Second Year: Expands project complexity through interdisciplinary projects. Students use professional digital modelling tools, rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, etc.), electronic programming and innovative materials, gaining orientation towards production processes and the market. Collaborations with external companies are also introduced. Theoretical subjects include sociology, design management and history of technology, helping students understand industrial and social contexts.

Third Year: Represents the final stage of the programme, applying all acquired skills to complex, realistic projects, often in collaboration with companies. Students deepen knowledge of engineering, cost analysis and advanced prototyping to create tangible, market-ready products. Tools for interface design (UI) and user experience (UX) are introduced, alongside strategic skills in marketing, sustainability and project management.

The programme concludes with the thesis project, which may be individual, interdisciplinary or developed in partnership with a company. It is an opportunity to demonstrate autonomy, critical thinking and organisational skills within a simulated professional context.
