On June the 14th, IED is set to unveil the large installation TRANSITIONS, an expression of how reflections of fashion and art are spontaneously bound together. Mentor is Lucy Orta
The unveiling will take place in the Salone Brunelleschi at the Istituto degli Innocenti as part of Pitti Uomo 104. The brains behind the project are a group of eight Fashion Design students selected from the IED Group campuses and led by mentor Lucy Orta, an international visual artist known for her extraordinary talent for combining drawing, sculpture, textiles, photography, film, and performance and address contemporary themes with an innovative language of co-creation. Students were asked to decode the term transition, understood as a moment of passage and complexity that every change entails: every transition is the consequence of a need to adapt to a crisis that at the same time allows us to design a different future.
The installation is choral and focuses on materials research and technological innovation: clothes designed by generative Artificial Intelligence, fabrics that reproduce sounds or grow on their own before naturally reabsorbing into the earth. The young Fashion Designers tell their stories as future active protagonists of a world they will have to inhabit, the designs become the means through which they express their respective points of view on contemporary issues.
The choice of the Istituto degli Innocenti as a venue for the installation underscores the focus on major human and social issues, at the heart of IED’s educational mission. A school and place of critical production in constant dialogue with institutions, IED is also an incubator of ideas and processes to be developed and presented on occasions of international confrontation with the fashion production sector such as Pitti.
