An emotional and abstract experience based on the contrast between over-stimulation and simplicity in which discovering is more important than seeing

A multidisciplinary team of IED Barcelona students has designed the scenography, costumes, projections and lighting for In the beginning everything was white, a micro-opera that was performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu from 5 to 9 July, on the occasion of the 2nd edition of the Òh!pera project.

Composed by six hands — Itziar Viloria, Alex Tentor and Jordi Oriol — and performed by the soprano Ariadna Aranda, this immersive performance addresses how hyperconnectivity and visual over-consumption saturate our daily lives. To do this, the piece proposes an emotional and abstract experience based on the contrast between over-stimulation and simplicity in which discovering is more important than seeing.

The staging is made up of a stage house that defines the musical and performance space, generating a visual filter with the spectators, while the lighting plays with the visible and invisible to mark a revelation through light and video projections. As for the costumes, the proposal is based on oversized work overalls as an initial concept that is transformed and adapted to the different characters throughout the piece.

During the co-creation process, special attention was paid to the structure and materials, so that they are sustainable and respect the ephemeral nature of the opera. The material that covers the stage house, for example, does not simply act as a covering layer, but becomes part of the special effects, generating a “big surprise” among the spectators.

Òh!pera is an initiative promoted by the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Barcelona City Council’s Department for Tourism and Creative Industries through Disseny Hub Barcelona and with Àlex Ollé as project mentor.
