The Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Styling and Art Direction at IED Roma focuses on visual communication and multimedia content creation, with a strong connection to the worlds of cinema, television and entertainment.
Through practical workshops, studio shoots and an extensive styling archive, students develop skills in fashion editing, digital media content creation and storytelling for fashion publishing.

In the second year, students can choose a specialisation in Fashion Stylist, which explores areas such as commercial styling, celebrity styling and visual merchandising, or in Fashion Editor, which focuses on editorial and video production, covering all stages of content creation: from moodboard development and garment selection to set design and final editing.

Rome, a city of culture and entertainment, offers a unique backdrop for developing a contemporary visual language, where fashion styling interacts with visual arts, costume and creative experimentation.

Course structure and contents:

The programme spans three years, during which design practice is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills development and the use of innovative tools.

The first year introduces students to the world of fashion publishing and styling, providing a solid theoretical and practical foundation through a balance of historical, artistic and design disciplines, fostering a critical awareness of the cultural and communicative context of fashion. Workshop activities focus on style recognition and editorial line analysis, encouraging an interdisciplinary approach to visual and stylistic design from the outset.

In the second year, students choose between the Fashion Stylist and Fashion Editor specialisations. The former deepens knowledge of styling techniques, from commercial styling to celebrity styling and visual merchandising, promoting creative experimentation and project autonomy. The latter focuses on the editorial process, covering all stages of content creation: from research and garment selection to visual development and writing for print and digital media. Both paths include professional collaborations, group projects and experimentation with the most current visual languages.

The third year is dedicated to project autonomy and the development of a personal vision. In Fashion Stylist, the focus is on advanced photo shoots and visual merchandising projects, with particular attention to communication and commercial objectives. In Fashion Editor, students explore themes related to subcultures and contemporary fashion, creating visual and written content that evolves into complete editorial formats.

The thesis project, carried out individually or in collaboration with partner companies, represents the culmination of the three-year programme. It ranges from creating magazines and communication agencies to developing research projects or editorial publications. Each project becomes an opportunity to express individual talent, demonstrating analytical, design and storytelling skills, as well as a clear vision of one’s role within the contemporary fashion system.
