Pathos Formulas: Francesca Gavin Curates IED’s Project at Pitti Uomo 110 Exploring Fashion and Visual Arts

On the occasion of Pitti Uomo 110, IED presented Pathos Formulas, an exhibition and installation project that transformed the former Teatro dell’Oriuolo in Florence into a space for research, dialogue and experimentation. From June 16 to 19, the exhibition brought together fashion, visual arts and editorial practices, creating a creative ecosystem where images, languages and processes intersected and informed one another.
Curated by Francesca Gavin, Editor-in-Chief of EPOCH Review and Director of Visual Arts at Murmur, the project brought together students from fashion design, styling, photography, graphic design, video, sound and interior design, who collaborated across nine interconnected project groups. The result was a collective exploration that reflected IED’s educational approach, grounded in interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation as a creative methodology.
At the heart of the project was the concept of Pathosformel, developed by art historian Aby Warburg: the idea that images, symbols and gestures travel through time, continuously resurfacing with new meanings. From this premise emerged a living, open archive, where the past was not treated as a static memory but constantly reactivated through new connections, reinterpretations and visual imaginaries.
In Florence, a city deeply intertwined with Warburg’s intellectual legacy, Pathos Formulas found its natural setting. The installation created a space where historical references and contemporary perspectives converged, blurring the boundaries between exhibition, laboratory and editorial practice. The result was an immersive experience that framed fashion as a cultural practice and an evolving language, capable of engaging with the visual arts while generating new forms of collective storytelling.
